Rennes in May: the season when the city finally emerges from its winter grey, the terraces in the pedestrian centre filling up the moment a ray of sun breaks through, and that density of cafés that have fully embraced the culture of students and freelancers. The city is milder than many in summer, which paradoxically makes it one of the good places to work outdoors without baking.
We toured Les Lices, hung around Saint-Melaine and explored the Champs-Libres neighbourhood to find the terraces really worth your time. Here are five addresses to save in your Rennes favourites.
L'Enchanté
Rue Saint-Melaine, L'Enchanté offers organic teas, homemade pastries, fresh seasonal dishes and a friendly atmosphere. It's the archetypal café-workspace that gets everything right: carefully chosen products, a nice team, and a genuine openness to laptops.
Wi-Fi available, food, atmosphere, laptop welcome, decent terrace. Google rating of 4.7 from over 340 reviews. The quality-comfort-price ratio is genuinely good.
Our favourite for starting the day with a well-kept setting and a treat that stands out.
Café des Champs Libres
Cours des Alliés, Café des Champs Libres is a city-centre café with power outlets, Wi-Fi, a large terrace in summer, close to the station and a museum. Its location makes it unbeatable for convenience.
Wi-Fi available, power outlets, quiet, large tables, food, refined atmosphere. Google rating of 4.2 from over 430 reviews. The terrace benefits from a pleasant exposure.
The go-to spot for fitting in a session between a train and a meeting, or for long quiet days.
Avec Co
Rue du Breil, Avec Co is a renovated industrial warehouse with large bay windows, cosy sofas, power outlets and effective Wi-Fi. The place is genuinely well done design-wise, and the atmosphere is ideal for concentration.
Wi-Fi available, power outlets, guaranteed quiet, large tables, food, laptop obviously welcome. Google rating of 4.5 from over 5,600 reviews. The footfall is real — the place works.
A great option for long sessions where you want a distinctive setting without paying coworking premium prices.
Oh My Biche Colombier
Rue du Puits Mauger, Oh My Biche Colombier is a coffee shop ideal for remote work with a nice playlist, original drinks, cool decor and comfortable benches. A staple of the Colombier neighbourhood for a few-hour session.
Wi-Fi available, laptop welcome, food, atmosphere, relaxed quiet. Google rating of 4.5 from over 900 reviews. Small decent terrace for sunny days.
A good spot for morning and afternoon sessions in a relaxed setting.
Cwyk
Rue Lavoisier, Cwyk is a city-centre coworking space with shared desks, lounge areas and an outdoor terrace. Classic coworking format, but well equipped.
Terrace, refined atmosphere. Google rating of 4.6 from 7 reviews. The right choice if you're looking for a light coworking setup for occasional sessions.
The spot for freelancers who want a clean, quiet coworking space without heavy infrastructure.
How to work well on a terrace in Rennes
Three useful rules in town:
- Breton weather is unpredictable. Go for covered terraces or ones with an easy indoor option.
- Terraces fill up fast the moment it's sunny. To get a seat, aim to arrive before 11 am.
- The pedestrian centre gets busy in the evenings. For late sessions, side streets are more manageable.
