Villeurbanne is Lyon's neighbour that people too often forget to mention. And yet this city of 150,000 residents, right next to Lyon's 3rd and 6th arrondissements, has its own identity — more working-class, more student-oriented thanks to the Doua campus, and increasingly sought after by freelancers and remote workers who find central Lyon is getting a bit pricey. The tram and metro line A put you just a few minutes from the Presqu'île, but you don't even need to go there: Villeurbanne has its own addresses for working away from home.

The offer is varied for a city of this size: from structured coworking to cosy bookshop-cafés, plus an innovation space open to everyone. We've selected 4 spots worth the trip, whether you're a long-time Villeurbanne resident or newly settled in.

La Cordée République

Rue Francis de Pressensé, in the République neighbourhood. La Cordée is a well-known coworking network in Lyon, and their Villeurbanne outpost is one of the most welcoming. The space is collaborative, with several types of workstations — large shared tables, quieter corners, and even a domiciliation service for those who want to formalise their presence. The atmosphere is relaxed; you can tell people know each other and help each other out, without it becoming overwhelming.

Solid Wi-Fi, power outlets everywhere, and accessible rates that make La Cordée a realistic option for independents who don't want to blow their budget. Cited by Colivys in their top Lyon coworking spaces, the place attracts a mixed crowd — freelancers, micro-entrepreneurs, remote employees — creating a pleasant working energy. Open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

The ideal spot for joining a coworking community without breaking the bank.

Carbone Café

Rue Michel Servet, between les Gratte-Ciel and the campus. Carbone is a café-bar-bookshop that ticks all the boxes for a successful work spot. The setting is warm and uncluttered, the Wi-Fi is reliable, and the atmosphere is quiet enough to concentrate without effort. You can browse between work sessions, have a good coffee, and grab a bite without moving — the kind of hybrid place where you feel good without quite knowing why.

The interior is bright, the furniture is carefully chosen without being pretentious, and the noise level stays low. It's the type of café where people speak quietly, where laptops are welcome, and where nobody gives you a look if you stay three hours in front of your screen. Open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 8pm, and Saturday from 9am to 7pm. Closed Sunday.

Our favourite for full working days in a setting with real character.

La Pré-fabrique de l'innovation

Avenue Jean Capelle, on the Doua campus. La Pré-fabrique is a 350 m² space dedicated to creativity and experimentation, open to students, researchers and entrepreneurs. The place is bright, the large tables let you spread out, and the atmosphere is studious — we're on a university campus, and the tone follows. It's free and open to everyone, which makes it a very interesting option if you're in the area.

Recommended by Hub-Grade as one of the best free workspaces in the greater Lyon area, La Pré-fabrique has that particular energy of innovation spaces — people working on varied projects, in a setting designed to stimulate ideas. Open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5:30pm.

The great deal for working for free in a stimulating, well-equipped environment.

Villeurbanne deserves to be better known for nomadic work. Less saturated than central Lyon, well served by public transport, and with addresses that hold up, the city offers a credible alternative for those looking for a regular spot without crossing the Rhône every morning. The Gratte-Ciel neighbourhood and the Doua campus concentrate most of the offer, and we expect to see new addresses emerge.

We update this selection regularly. If you try one of these spots or know one we've missed, we want to hear about it. And if you want to explore other cities, check out all our guides on Deskover.
