Strasbourg in May means light bouncing off the half-timbered houses of la Petite France, the Ill becoming the centre of gravity the moment the sun comes out, and that density of cafés with open windows that make you want to set up your laptop inside. The city has a solid café-coworking scene, and several addresses have made the most of the quays to offer genuinely usable terraces.
We've done a lap of la Petite France, walked the quays and explored the centre to find the terraces worth your time. Here are five addresses to keep in your Strasbourg favourites.
Les Savons d'Hélène
Rue Sainte-Hélène, Les Savons d'Hélène is a friendly bar with a magnificent bright veranda and a terrace for nice days. A hybrid format between café and bar, but the team's attitude is genuinely welcoming for workers.
Wi-Fi available, careful atmosphere, honest food, quiet assured. Google rating of 4.4 with more than 1,400 reviews. The veranda is a real asset when the sky turns unpredictable.
Our favourite for morning sessions when you want something beautiful, calm, and a premium indoor option if the weather turns.
Coffee Stub
Quai des Pêcheurs, Coffee Stub is a favourite among students and independent workers for its excellent coffee, its quiet, and the view over the quays. It's the archetype of the working Strasbourg café that delivers.
Wi-Fi available, quiet atmosphere, food, laptop obviously welcome. Google rating of 4.6 with more than 750 reviews. The waterside terrace is a draw in itself.
The go-to spot for deep work sessions where you want to work with a view.
Atlantico
Also on Quai des Pêcheurs, Atlantico is a barge on the Ill with space to spread out, an inspiring view and an atmosphere conducive to concentration. The format is rare, the experience is singular.
Wi-Fi available, large tables, laptop welcome, a truly distinctive atmosphere. Google rating of 4.3 with more than 3,300 reviews. The barge moves gently — which is more charming than distracting for most workers.
The smart choice for sessions where you want to work in a setting you won't find anywhere else.
Le Lodge
Rue Paul-Éluard, Le Lodge is a 600 m² business centre in bright colours, facing the Kibitzenau tram stop, with a pleasant outdoor space in summer. The equipment is solid and the atmosphere is less formal than classic business coworking spaces.
Professional Wi-Fi, power outlets, laptop accepted, careful atmosphere. Google rating of 4.3 with nearly 800 reviews. The terrace is a genuine bonus, and the tram connection makes access easy from the city centre.
The spot for freelancers who want a well-equipped coworking space outside the hyper-centre.
Station Seja
Rue des Hallebardes, Station Seja is a small private coworking space right in the centre, with equipped workspaces, a warm atmosphere and a supportive community for freelancers and digital entrepreneurs.
Professional Wi-Fi, power outlets, quiet, large tables, food, laptop obviously welcome. Google rating of 5 with 28 reviews. An intimate format that's a world away from large, sterile spaces.
The go-to for freelancers who prefer a real community of a few dozen people over a large, anonymous space.
How to work well on a terrace in Strasbourg
Three useful rules on the Alsace side:
- The climate is continental. Temperature swings between morning and afternoon are serious. Bring an extra layer for morning terraces.
- The Ill quays fill up fast. To get a spot and some quiet, aim for before 11am or after 2pm.
- The Christmas market affects the tourist zone. Outside the winter period, city-centre terraces are more accessible.
