Saint-Jean-de-Luz in May — the bay waking up, the terraces reopening under the arcades of La Pergola, and the smell of sea air that follows you through every street. The town has something unique on the Basque coast: a bay entirely protected by three breakwaters, which means terraces are usable even when the ocean is rough further north in Hossegor or Anglet. The chic seaside atmosphere, the evening paseos, and the spirit of Donibane Lohizune all coexist without clashing.

We've done a full tour of the terraces where you can genuinely get work done in Saint-Jean-de-Luz — not just grab a coffee for 20 minutes. Here's our selection of 5 spots.

Restaurant Hélianthal Thalazur

Place Maurice Ravel, right on the waterfront. Hélianthal is in a league of its own: it's the restaurant of the Thalazur hotel, open to all, with its vast 1,200m² terrace facing the beach, panoramic windows and 1930s seaside atmosphere. The rooftop panoramic bar is the goal for the end of the day, to finish your tasks as the sun sets over the bay.

Professional Wi-Fi, peaceful, high-end food. The Sunday brunch at €49 served 11:30am–2:30pm is worth the visit for a "treat your team to a terrace day" session. Referenced by the Guide du Pays Basque and the tourist office. More expensive than everyday options, but unbeatable for client days or strategic team sessions.

Our favourite for working on a terrace in Saint-Jean-de-Luz — genuine ocean-facing sessions without compromising on the setting.

Horizon Brunch

22 Rue Joseph Garat, nestled under the arcades of La Pergola. Horizon Brunch offers a more intimate terrace, sheltered by arcades — ideal on sunny days or when there's light rain. Coffee from a local roaster, vegan and veggie options, a generous brunch buffet at €35. Open 9:30am–4:30pm every day, an amplitude that fits well with a remote working rhythm.

Wi-Fi, food, cosy vibe. The 9:30–11am slot is ideal for having the terrace to yourself before the brunch rush. Referenced by the Guide du Pays Basque and La Petite Rade in their brunch selections. As the terrace is in a pedestrian arcade zone, shade is guaranteed even in the height of July — a rare advantage by the Basque seaside.

The go-to terrace for productive mornings under arcades, sheltered from the blazing sun.

Donnie Ocean

9 Avenue de Verdun, a stone's throw from the station. Donnie Ocean has a small terrace on the avenue, perfect for morning sessions and late afternoons. The Pacific cool vibe, the carefully mismatched furniture and the décor paying homage to the local surf scene set the tone. Breakfast and lunch menu with bagels, smoked salmon, charcuterie, fresh juices and Basque beers.

Wi-Fi in place, relaxed atmosphere, dog-friendly. Referenced by the Saint-Jean-de-Luz tourist office and several local guides. Aim for the 8:30–11am slots for a quiet terrace, before the station crowd and the buzz of Avenue Verdun kick in. Handy if you arrive by train with your laptop.

The spot for getting work done on a terrace in surf café style, 100 metres from the station.

Cocoon Coffee Shop

15 Rue du Maréchal Harispe, right in the Halles neighbourhood. Cocoon has a few tables on the pedestrian street side, perfect for starting the morning with pancakes and emails. Rue Harispe is quiet, the morning light is just right, and the coffee shop stays open all day until 6pm except on Thursdays. Indulgent menu with pancakes, French toast, açaí bowls.

Wi-Fi, pastel cosy atmosphere, open kitchen all day. Aim for the 8:30–11am or 2:30–5pm slots to have the terrace to yourself — the lunchtime rush is clearly brunch-oriented. Referenced by tourisme64 and the local boutique ecosystem.

The go-to terrace spot for brunch-and-work mornings, in the most vibrant neighbourhood in town.

Le Local Coworking

9 Avenue Jauréguiberry, a stone's throw from the Halles. Le Local isn't a coffee shop, but the coworking space has outdoor areas and a terrace accessible to members, perfect for alternating indoors and outdoors over a long session. Fibre Wi-Fi, soundproof booths, meeting rooms: if you buy a day pass or you're a member, you get access to a coworking terrace right in the centre of town.

A different format from a classic café terrace: it's a professional setting where you can work outside for several hours without anyone asking you to free up the table. Referenced by Paysbasque.net, Urbidesk and Digital64. 24/7 access for members, day pass available.

The go-to terrace for long, serious sessions — no service pressure or café noise.

How to make the most of working on a terrace in Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Three useful rules for this part of the Basque coast:

  • The bay shields you from strong ocean winds, but not from a light sea breeze. Pack something to weigh down your papers and a windbreaker in shoulder season, especially near Hélianthal and the seafront.
  • Terraces fill up quickly in July and August. Aim for mornings before 11am or 2–4pm to find space and get work done in peace. The peak tourist season runs from mid-July to mid-August.
  • Shade is precious. Under the arcades of La Pergola (Horizon, some Donnie tables) you're sheltered all day. On seafront terraces like Hélianthal, shade depends on the orientation and time of day.
