The sun hits hard from nine in the morning, the smell of coffee brewing at the counter, and you're torn between staying cool inside or taking your chances outside. In Montpellier, the question comes up fast: the city spends nearly six months a year in terrace mode, and the good spots for working outside are well worth the move from your flat.

We've covered l'Écusson, Port Marianne, and the area around Gare Saint-Roch to find the real work terraces: the ones with shade when it's 35 degrees, Wi-Fi that works outdoors, power outlets nearby, and a setting where you can put your laptop down without anyone giving you a look. Here are our seven favourite addresses for getting your to-do list done outside this summer.

Koffee Kitchen

A stone's throw from place de la Comédie, Koffee Kitchen plays the well-thought-out coffee shop card. The small terrace faces rue Glaize — quiet in the morning, livelier around midday. Inside it's bright, with power outlets everywhere and large windows that let in the light without turning the place into a greenhouse.

Practically speaking, it's solid: fast Wi-Fi, laptops welcome at all hours, and a food menu that goes well beyond the emergency muffin. Open every day from 9am to 4pm, which covers a good long morning of work with lunch on-site. With 4.7 on Google and over 1,600 reviews, it's become a reliable choice in the city centre.

Worth trying on a morning when you want to ease in gently on the terrace before the sun gets too direct, then move upstairs in the afternoon.

Café Solo

Rue Saint-Guilhem. Café Solo has been a Montpellier institution since 1991. An artisan roaster, a cosy interior, and a sheltered terrace right out front: you choose your atmosphere depending on the hour and your mood. When the mistral blows a little too hard, the inside is the perfect refuge. And the coffee, unsurprisingly, lives up to the house's reputation.

Wi-Fi available, a studious but warm atmosphere, and the option to grab a decent bite without moving. Open Tuesday to Saturday until 7pm (10am to 6pm on Mondays, closed Sundays), it's the address that saves you hours when you know you'll need to keep going without logistical breaks. Google rating of 4.5 from 437 reviews — we're not alone in recommending it.

The ideal go-to spot for freelancers who like to settle into a place and be recognised by the third visit.

BLEND

Head to rue du Bras de Fer, without doubt the most photogenic street in Montpellier. BLEND has set up a coffee shop there with a small terrace perfect for quiet mornings, and an interior that smells of sourdough and homemade pastries. The menu is made entirely in-house, and you can tell: the food is good.

Work-wise: stable Wi-Fi, calm atmosphere at opening, livelier around lunchtime. Power outlets are fewer than elsewhere, so come with a full battery if you're planning a long session. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am or 11am to 6pm. Closed Monday and Sunday — worth noting so you don't show up to a locked door.

Perfect for a short session with a good pastry, or a working brunch on Saturday morning before the street fills up.

La Panacée

You push open the door of La Panacée, on rue de l'École de Pharmacie, and you find yourself in a contemporary art centre that also has a café-restaurant with an incredible interior courtyard. This is the kind of place where the terrace isn't just a pavement with two tables: it's a real patio, shaded, quiet, where the city noise disappears the moment you step through the archway.

You can work in peace, enjoy an accessible menu, and take an exhibition break between work blocks. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 6pm, it's the end-of-week spot when you want a change of scenery without changing cities. Google rating of 4.4 from over 2,100 reviews: the terrace has already won over quite a few people.

Our favourite for writing afternoons when you want quiet, natural light, and zero temptation to scroll because the environment is already visually nourishing.

The Island

Avenue de Toulouse. The Island is a coworking space unlike any other. A green bubble with a terrace, pergolas, hammocks, and a visible environmental commitment: it's closer to a shared garden than a sterile open plan. And yet everything is designed for serious work.

Pro Wi-Fi, power outlets everywhere, quiet spaces, and the option to eat on-site without moving. The terrace is genuinely usable even in the height of summer thanks to the pergolas filtering the sun. Open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm. Google rating of 4.9 from 173 reviews, making it one of the best-rated coworking spaces in the city.

The spot for full days when you want the comfort of a coworking space without feeling trapped in an open plan. And for breaks between calls, the hammock is included.

Le Triskell

Rue de Candolle. Le Triskell is one of those hidden bars you keep a little to yourself. Large shaded terrace, discreet location, and that relaxed atmosphere that works well when you want to get work done without being in a full-on café-coworking setting. Regulars come as much for work as for a drink at the end of the afternoon.

It's less well equipped than a coffee shop in terms of power outlets, but the terrace is clearly worth the trip on hot days: the shade is generous, the noise stays contained during the day, and no one will give you a look if you get your laptop out. Open every day from 11am until very late (1am on weekdays, midnight on Sundays). Google rating of 4.3 from over 1,000 reviews.

A gem for afternoon sessions when you want to work on a terrace without spending a fortune and switch to a beer as soon as the day is done.

How to work well on a terrace in Montpellier

Three things to keep in mind so you don't burn out your session:

  • Shade is non-negotiable. Before 11am and after 5pm, almost anything works. In between, check there's real protection (pergola, trees, awning) or that the terrace faces north. Otherwise your screen becomes unreadable and you become a lamb chop.
  • Outdoor Wi-Fi is inconsistent. A signal that works fine inside can fade the moment you step away from the door. For a call, it's better to test before settling in or stay close to the wall.
  • Stay seriously hydrated. A terrace at 30 degrees means three coffees and no water if you're not careful. Ask for a carafe of water when you arrive — your body will thank you around 4pm.
