Bordeaux in May: the warm blonde stone slowly soaking up the sun, the terraces of les Chartrons filling up by late morning, and that quality of light that makes the city liveable even in the height of summer. The Bordeaux coworking scene has exploded in recent years, and several spots have taken the bold step of building generous terraces along the Garonne.

We covered les Bassins à flot, hung around les Chartrons, and explored Fondaudège to find the genuinely good terraces for getting work done. Here are five spots to keep in your Bordeaux favourites.

Mama Works

On the Quai Lawton in les Bassins à flot, Mama Works is an urban working café spanning 300 m² with a coworking space, a large terrace overlooking the docks, and wide tables for nomadic workers. It's become a local institution.

Wi-Fi, power outlets, big tables, food, a polished vibe, and affordable prices. Google rating: 4.6 from 240 reviews. The dock-side terrace is what makes it special during the season.

Our favourite on the Bassins à flot side for full-day sessions with a view of the water.

Now Coworking

On the Quai des Chartrons, Now Coworking is a 4,000 m² space with a huge 600 m² terrace overlooking the Garonne, near-daily events, and a range of services (gym, table tennis). This is the event-coworking concept that set its ambitions high.

Professional Wi-Fi, power outlets, large tables, food, a dynamic vibe. Google rating: 4.7 from nearly 100 reviews. The Garonne terrace is probably the most aspirational in the city.

The go-to spot for weeks when you want the full comfort of a coworking space with a view.

La Halle Héméra Bordeaux

On Rue Fondaudège, La Halle Héméra is an impressive start-up accelerator: a working café, a vast atrium, shared desks across three floors, and a 250 m² rooftop bar terrace. The experience is complete and the professional environment is genuinely stimulating.

Professional Wi-Fi, power outlets, large tables, food, a polished atmosphere. Google rating: 4.7 from over 100 reviews. The rooftop is a selling point on its own.

The spot for freelancers who want to be immersed in an entrepreneurial ecosystem without giving up comfort.

MOTA — Manutention

On Rue de la Manutention, MOTA is the second MOTA space: 400 m² of modern industrial design with exposed beams, around fifty workstations, a 100 m² terrace, and a regular events programme. The format is more intimate than Now Coworking, and the atmosphere is quieter.

Professional Wi-Fi, power outlets, large tables, polished atmosphere. Google rating: 4.9 from 37 reviews. The terrace is usable and the design is worth the trip.

A great spot for freelancers who want a design-forward setting without the big-chain feel.

Médiathèque du Jardin Public

At the Jardin Public terrace, the library offers pleasant workspaces with free Wi-Fi and a genuinely restful setting. It's a less obvious choice but unbeatable on budget: no minimum spend, real peace and quiet, and the terrace as a bonus.

Wi-Fi available, guaranteed calm, laptops welcome. Google rating: 4.5 from 31 reviews. Less equipped than a coworking space, obviously, but the serenity of the setting makes the difference.

The smart pick for study sessions, long reading stints, or writing in complete quiet.

How to work well on a terrace in Bordeaux

Three useful rules along the Garonne:

  • The heat is serious in July and August. Above 35 degrees, unshaded terraces become unusable. Go for a ventilated rooftop or an air-conditioned coworking space.
  • The river wind can catch you off guard. On les Bassins à flot or the quays, bring something to weigh down your papers.
  • Les Chartrons fills up fast from 5 pm onwards. For a quiet session, aim for mornings and the early afternoon hours.
