On Sundays, you've got work to do but the coworking spaces are closed, your usual cafés are too, and you're starting to stare blankly at your flat. Bad news: most workspaces take a day off. Good news: there are spots that genuinely play the game, across several French cities. You just need to know where to look, and accept that working on Sundays is a bit of a different discipline.

The Sunday problem

Classic coworking spaces run Monday to Friday, sometimes Saturday mornings if you're lucky. Sundays: shuttered. Same goes for a good chunk of cafés — many are closed, open later, or run a brunch service that makes it impossible to set up your laptop without getting the evil eye from a table of eight waiting for their eggs Benedict.

What that means in practice: you need to target specific spots, not just "a nice café". Cafés and coworking hybrids open 7 days a week, well-designed hotel lobbies, certain community spaces that keep something going at the weekend — that's your shortlist of serious candidates.

The golden rule: check the hours before you head out. On Sundays, even places that say they're open sometimes have reduced hours, a one-off closure, or a private event. Two minutes on Google Maps or a quick look at their Instagram and you'll avoid a nasty surprise.

What works on Sundays: the winning trio

Three types of spaces hold up on Sundays.

Hybrid café-coworking spaces first: these are places designed from the start to welcome remote workers, with solid Wi-Fi, accessible power outlets, and a clear policy on laptops. Many stay open 7 days a week because that's their core business.

Hotel lobbies next: often underestimated, they're open around the clock, generally have a decent connection, and staff are used to seeing people work. The vibe varies, but in mid-range and upscale hotels you'll often find comfortable armchairs and a quiet atmosphere.

Cultural community spaces last: university libraries open on Sundays, cultural centres, community spaces. Less consistent, but when it works, it's often free and very peaceful. Check ahead — some have reduced Sunday hours.

Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Montpellier: the cities that deliver

Paris has the advantage of scale: with that many cafés, even if 60% close on Sundays, there are still enough left to get good work done. The central and eastern arrondissements — especially the 11e and 10e — have a solid density of laptop-friendly cafés open 7 days a week.

Lyon holds up well on Sundays, particularly thanks to a few café-coworking spots in the 1st and 7th arrondissement that keep weekend hours. The Marché de la Création over in la Croix-Rousse brings life on Sunday mornings and benefits the cafés around it, which often open earlier than elsewhere.

Bordeaux has developed a real culture of remote working in cafés over the past few years. The Saint-Pierre neighbourhood and the streets around rue Sainte-Catherine have several spots that play the game on Sundays. Look at specialty coffee shops: they tend to have more consistent hours and a clientele used to laptops.

Montpellier is a student city with a different rhythm: some spaces stay active on Sundays, particularly around Place de la Comédie and in l'Écusson. University libraries sometimes have Sunday sessions — worth checking depending on the academic calendar.

The Sunday mindset

Working on Sundays isn't the same as a Tuesday. The spot might be noisier in the morning (brunch will do that), quieter in the afternoon. The Wi-Fi might be more congested. And you might not be in quite the same mode as on weekdays.

A few adjustments that make all the difference: arrive before 10am if you want peace, before the brunch crowd takes over. Always bring your charger — power outlets aren't always easy to find. Have a backup plan: a second spot identified in case the first is packed or unexpectedly closed.

And accept that a Sunday in a lively café, with a good coffee and natural light, can be a perfectly decent way to hit a deadline. You don't need perfect conditions to make progress.
