Summer's here, the sun is blazing, and you're dreaming of taking your laptop outside. Great idea — as long as you don't turn your work session into a nightmare. Glare on your screen, overheating battery, phantom Wi-Fi, unbearable background noise: terraces can quickly become a trap. Here's how to choose the right ones, when to go, what to bring, and which French cities you'll genuinely love working outdoors in this summer.

What to check before setting up your laptop

Not all terraces are equal, and the classic mistake is sitting down anywhere because "it's nice outside". Before you open your laptop, ask yourself: is there shade during the hours you'll be working? Does the Wi-Fi actually reach outside (not just 50cm from the door)? Is there a power outlet within reach, or are you racing against your battery?

The golden rule: a covered terrace or one with thick parasols is far better than sitting in full sun. Not just for your screen, but for your concentration — working at 35°C in direct sunlight is exhausting. Also check the ambient noise level: a busy street with buses and scooters is a dealbreaker for calls.

The best time slots for working outdoors

Timing is everything. In summer, the ideal window for a productive terrace session is 8am–11:30am and 4:30pm–7pm. In the morning, the light is soft, the terraces are quiet, and you get work done in the cool before it gets really hot. In the late afternoon, the sun is less aggressive, temperatures drop, and the vibe is often more relaxed.

Absolutely avoid the 12pm–3pm slot in July and August in the south — it's unusable. Your screen will be unreadable, your battery will heat up and drain twice as fast, and you'll spend your time chasing the shade. These are also the hours when restaurant terraces are packed and noisy. Keep those slots for indoors, in a coworking space or an air-conditioned café.

What to bring (and not forget)

Your terrace setup takes some planning. The number one enemy is brightness: a matte screen makes a real difference, and if you have a glossy screen, an anti-glare filter can be a game changer. Set your screen brightness to maximum in advance — searching for the setting in full sun is a pain.

For your battery, always leave with 100% charge and bring a power bank if you're planning more than 2 hours. Power outlets on terraces exist but are rare — don't count on them. A USB-C fast-charging cable in your bag is essential.

For sound: active noise-cancelling headphones, not just regular in-ear buds. Even if you're not on a call, they block out background noise and keep you focused. And if you do have calls, make sure the microphone picks up your voice and not the pigeons and car horns.

The French cities where terraces are really worth it

Not every city offers the same experience. In Montpellier, the terraces of l'Écusson have that special quality — cobbled streets, natural shade, and a well-established café-work culture. It's one of the cities where you feel least out of place opening your laptop outside.

In Nice, the Vieux-Nice and the Libération neighbourhood have terrace spots with real character, and the coastal microclimate makes mornings very pleasant even in the height of summer. Bordeaux offers the riverside terraces and city-centre spots, with a more manageable summer climate than people expect. Lyon has its Croix-Rousse slopes with independent cafés that play the game perfectly. And Aix-en-Provence? Hard to beat working under the plane trees on the Cours Mirabeau — shaded, quiet in the morning, with an impressive density of good cafés per square metre.

When a terrace isn't enough

Let's be honest: a terrace is perfect for light half-day sessions, tasks that don't require maximum focus, or writing and email sessions. For a genuinely intense full day of work, a coworking space with a terrace or garden is often the best combination — you get the best of both worlds.

Several spaces in France have exactly this format: an air-conditioned indoor room for the hot hours, and a pleasant outdoor area for breaks or cooler time slots. If you're planning to move around this summer, these are the places to target first.
