Bayonne between May and September — the smell of the barthes early in the morning, the banks of the Nive waking up slowly, terraces spilling over on the Petit Bayonne side and the Saint-Esprit district coming alive on the other side of the Adour. The city has a precious geographical feature for working outdoors: two rivers meeting right in the centre, giving you two different atmospheres depending on where you open your laptop. More laid-back on the Adour side, more animated on the Nive side.
We toured the terraces where you can genuinely work in Bayonne — not just have a drink — and here is our selection of 5 spots.
Korail
Place Pereire, on the station forecourt on the Saint-Esprit side. Korail has a large south-facing terrace that catches the light all day — perfect for morning sessions and late afternoons. Free Wi-Fi is available on the terrace too, the café-restaurant serves all day, and the upstairs coworking floor remains accessible if the heat gets too strong.
Free Wi-Fi, power outlets inside, food and coffee on site with local produce from chef Stéphane, south-facing terrace. Open every day including weekends (9 a.m.–7:30 p.m.), making it the most reliable option for working outdoors, weekends included. Listed by BabToday and Passion Télétravail in their Bayonne remote work selections.
Our favourite for working on a terrace in Bayonne without spending coworking rates, in a next-generation station-community-space vibe very much Saint-Esprit.
Akelarre Café
4 rue Pontrique, Petit Bayonne, two steps from the Nive. Akelarre has a sunny terrace that catches the midday light well, in a quiet street slightly set back from the main tourist arteries. It's one of the rare spots in Petit Bayonne where the terrace lets you genuinely set up a laptop without being squeezed into a stream of foot traffic from the bars.
Wi-Fi confirmed, homemade food using produce from the Bayonne market, relaxed atmosphere. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m.–4 p.m., which fits perfectly with morning sessions and a working lunch. Cited by Wicofi in its top "café to work in Bayonne". Aim for the 10 a.m.–12 p.m. slot to have the terrace in peace before the lunch rush.
The terrace option for remote workers who like a committed, vegetarian and quiet setting, 5 minutes from the château fort and the cathedral.
Now Coworking Bayonne
52 avenue du 8 Mai 1945, south of Bayonne. Now has a large terrace integrated into its 600 m² ON SPOT space, accessible to residents and nomads. It's a genuine coworking terrace, sized so you can really work there for several hours with your team or solo — not just grab a coffee between meetings.
Professional Wi-Fi, power outlets, cleaning, coffee/tea included, restaurant and lounges accessible from the terrace. Open to nomads from 49 euros excl. VAT per month. A lifestyle programme (yoga, after-work events, breakfast sessions) that regularly animates the terrace. Listed by Guide du Pays Basque, Workin Space and Passion Télétravail.
The coworking-terrace choice for a solo deep-focus day or a team session in the open air, outside the historic city centre.
Blondie Saint-Esprit
33 rue Sainte-Catherine, on the main pedestrian street of Saint-Esprit. Blondie has a small street-side terrace, perfect for early mornings 8 a.m.–11 a.m. when the sun is rising and the neighbourhood isn't yet full. Rue Sainte-Catherine is the backbone of the new Saint-Esprit, so you work in a lively flow without being in the middle of traffic noise.
Wi-Fi in place, homemade vegan and vegetarian food, Sunday brunches. Open Monday to Saturday 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., making it an ideal morning option for fitting in two or three hours of work before a healthy lunch. Cited by Kinda Break, Côte Basque Madame and Restaurant Guru.
The spot for productive mornings in a neighbourhood that's on the move, with brunch or lunch to follow.
Coffee Muxu
3 rue des Gouverneurs, Grand Bayonne. Coffee Muxu doesn't have the biggest terrace in our selection but it's probably the one serving the best speciality coffee in Bayonne. A few outdoor tables in a quiet alleyway of Grand Bayonne — perfect for a start-of-day session: speciality coffee, emails and writing.
Wi-Fi available, fair trade and traceable coffee, brunches and savoury organic dishes. Open Tuesday to Saturday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Monday. Listed by Wicofi, Kinda Break and BabToday in their Wi-Fi coffee shop tops for Bayonne.
The spot for focused mornings with a genuinely great coffee, in a quiet alleyway of Grand Bayonne between appointments in the city centre.
How to work well on a terrace in Bayonne
Three useful rules in the Pays Basque:
- Shade is hard to come by along the Nive and the Adour. Many riverside terraces are in full sun from noon to 5 p.m. in summer. Aim for morning slots (before 11 a.m.) or late afternoon (after 4 p.m.) if you want to work for several hours without burning, or go straight to Korail whose terrace is wider than those along the Nive.
- Saint-Esprit is quieter than Petit Bayonne in July–August. If you're looking for quiet during peak season, favour terraces on the Saint-Esprit side (Korail, Blondie, Café Lire) rather than the Nive banks, which overflow from aperitif time onwards.
- Fêtes de Bayonne (late July–early August, 5 days). There's no point thinking about working on a terrace during the Fêtes — the whole city is celebrating. Schedule your remote days outside this window or head to Anglet/Biarritz.

In summary
Bayonne covers every terrace-remote work use case: a free community space with a south-facing terrace (Korail), a committed café-studio on the Nive (Akelarre), a professional coworking terrace (Now), a morning café-restaurant in a neighbourhood on the move (Blondie), a speciality coffee shop in a quiet alley (Coffee Muxu). In season, it's best to aim for off-peak hours and avoid the Fêtes window entirely (late July–early August) if you really want to make progress on your work.
