Avignon in May has that tempered mildness before the July heat, the terraces of the historic centre setting out their tables on the cobblestones, and that theatrical atmosphere that infuses the city even when the festival is still months away. The city is small but it has a few genuinely solid addresses for working outside seriously.

We toured the intra-muros, explored the streets around the Palais des Papes, and looked towards the Synagogue neighbourhood to find the terraces that are really worth the trip. Here are five addresses to save in your Avignon favourites.

Café Tulipe

Rue des Trois Faucons, Café Tulipe is a classic for working in Avignon, with Wi-Fi, a clear working atmosphere, and a decent terrace. The value-for-equipment ratio is genuinely good for the centre.

Wi-Fi, quiet, laptops welcome, food and atmosphere. Google rating of 4.5 across nearly 650 reviews. It's one of the most frequented addresses by the city's freelances.

Our favourite within the walls for morning and afternoon sessions.

La Passerelle

Avenue de la Synagogue, La Passerelle is a high-end coworking space spanning 400 m² with 35 workstations, private offices, meeting rooms, phone booths, work alcoves, and a panoramic terrace. The equipment is comprehensive and the experience holds up over time.

Professional Wi-Fi, power outlets, large tables, guaranteed quiet, a carefully curated atmosphere. Google rating of 4.4 across 25 reviews. The format is a commitment but the comfort carries you through long weeks.

The go-to for freelances who want a high-end setting in Avignon.

Le Petit Louvre

Rue Saint-Agricol, Le Petit Louvre is a classic Avignon café right in the historic centre, perfect for a coffee break while you work. Simple format, unpretentious, but well placed for shorter sessions.

Wi-Fi, decent terrace, food. Google rating of 4.1 across more than 100 reviews.

A good spot for fitting in an hour of work between sightseeing or before a meeting.

Café des Arts

Place de l'Horloge, Café des Arts sits near the Palais des Papes, with an artistic atmosphere ideal for creatives and a good Wi-Fi connection. The terrace is central, and the animation of the square is part of the experience.

Wi-Fi available, lively atmosphere. Google rating of 4 across nearly 1,300 reviews. Better for short sessions than full days.

A good spot when you want to work against the most iconic backdrop in the city.

La Mirande

Place de l'Amirande, La Mirande is a five-star hotel offering a luxurious, inspiring setting for a few hours of work. It's the premium lobby option for days when you want absolute calm and a setting that looks good on video calls.

Wi-Fi available, terrace, high-end food. The format is a commitment but the experience is unique in the city.

The spot for important calls or writing sessions where you want a completely singular setting.

How to make the most of working from a terrace in Avignon

Three things to know:

  • The mistral can be fierce. When it picks up, forget the terrace and move inside. Also plan to weigh down your papers at the start of each session.
  • The July-August heat is serious. Above 35 degrees, only shaded and ventilated terraces hold up. Go for interior courtyards.
  • The festival changes everything between mid-July and early August. The city fills up, terraces get swamped, and working peacefully becomes almost impossible. Shift your sessions outside the festival period if you can.
